THE WINTER FAMILY
of South Australia

Descendants of Augustus WINTER, who arrived in Holdfast Bay, South Australia aboard the "Coromandel" on 12 January 1837, and Zillah BLAKEKEY, who arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, aboard the "Forfarshire", on 1 Aug 1848.

The vessel "Coromandel" departed London on 26 Sep 1836, and arrived at Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island, on 12 Jan 1837, then sailing to Holdfast Bay, and was under the command of Captain William Chesser. The "Coromandel" was a ship, of 662 tons, and carried 156 passengers, being 124 adults and 32 children.

The vessel "Forfarshire" departed London on 15 Apr 1848, and Plymouth, on 25 Apr 1848, and was under the command of Captain Adolphus Taylor. The "Forfarshire" was a ship, of 510 tons, and carried 237 passengers, one of whom died during the voyage, and six babies were born en route.

According to the passenger list of the "Coromandel", Augustus arrived with a wife and child; I have not been able to find any information about them as yet, but presumably his wife died during her early years here at the new colony, as he subsequently married Zillah.

The passenger list of the "Forfarshire" does not include any other members of Zillah's family.
